LABRECQUE, Alfred T. “Al”– of Spruce, MI, formerly of Flint, age 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 18, 2021 in Alpena, MI. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 12 PM Friday, September 10, 2021 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 404 N. Dayton St., Davison, MI 48423; Rev. Fr. Andrew A. Czajkowski celebrant. The family will receive visitors from 11 AM – 8 PM Thursday, September 9, 2021 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Road, Davison, MI 48423. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the Mass on Friday at the church. A Rosary will be prayed at 6 PM on Thursday at Allen Funeral Home. Al was born in Flint, MI on April 18, 1937, son of the late Wilfred and Alma (Andres) LaBrecque. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1955. After serving 2 years in the U.S. Army, he was hired as a postal clerk at the main Post Office in Flint, MI. After 33 years of service, he retired to his beloved cabin at Hubbard Lake. Al was a proud member of the American Postal Workers Union (APWU), where he served as a Steward, Vice President, and President. He continued his union service after retirement, representing the postal clerk retirees. One of Al’s biggest passions was coaching football. He started as a grade school coach in the Flint Area Parochial League at St. Mary’s and Blessed Sacrament. Later, he coached high school football at Holy Rosary, and ended his coaching career at Mt. Morris High School in 1990. He was inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches’ Hall of Fame in 1991. Inspired by is longtime friendship with Anita “Jo” Lake, and with the help of his good friend, U.S. Rep. Dale Kildee, he championed a cause to have medical insurance companies cover the cost of devices to be worn by women who have had mastectomies due to breast cancer, (Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act), which had previously been considered cosmetic.

Al is survived by  his wife, Michelle; his children, Paul (Dawne), Eric (Patricia), Laura, Gayle, Noel LaBrecque, and Kristin (Brian) McFarland; 8 grandchildren; brothers, Duane (Mary), Bruce (Cindy); sisters, Wilma Webb, Roseanne (Dan) Betlej, and Lynn LaBrecque. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred and Alma; daughter, Lisa; and son-in-law, Tim Lamrock.
