John Spohn

SPOHN, John Robert – of Flint, MI, age 90, passed away Friday, September 13, 2024. A Funeral Liturgy will be held 1 PM Monday, September 23, 2024 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 404 North Dayton Street, Davison, MI 48423; Deacon Dan Fairweather officiating. Interment immediately following the funeral in St. John Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive visitors 12-1 PM Monday, September 23, 2024 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church or an animal rescue center of your choice, in John’s memory. 

John was born in Flint, MI on February 22, 1934, son of the late James and Loretta Spohn. He married Elizabeth Phillips on June 9, 1965 and she preceded him in death on December 3, 2021. John worked as a switch man for Grand Trunk Railroad for many years, became a journeyman carpenter for and retired from Buick Motor Company. He obtained his contractor’s license from the State of Michigan and formed Spohn Construction Co.to do remodeling and other construction projects. In his youth, John was a caddy at the Flint Country Club, where he cultivated his love for the game of golf.  Over the years, he perfected his game and was an excellent player. He loved to teach and perfect the swing of those that he played with. John also fought in the Golden Gloves for which “the Spohn boys” were well known in the Flint area. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Knights of Coumbus Fourth Degree, St. Joseph Assembly 2211 and Flushing Council #8489. He volunteered for the Red Cross and traveled to Mississippi to pass out food and water after Hurricane Katrina, was a volunteer supervisor for the building of the playscape at Flushing Riverview Park, and an usher at St. John’s Davison.

John was a devoted father and loyal family man who is survived by his children, John (Debbie) Spohn, Brad (Connie) Hester, Phil (Robin) Hester, Debra (Dane) Williams, Scott (Lorrie) Hester, James (Donna) Spohn, and Mary Anne (John) Coon; sisters and brothers in-law, Joyce Spohn, Margie (Ree) Brady, Jean Griswold, Judy Miller, Claire (Edward) McKervey, Karen (Dale) Hammond, Jim (Judi) Phillips, and Gail (Tom) Boling; 16 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; many other loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Loretta Spohn; wife, Elizabeth Spohn; son, Curt Spohn; 11 siblings and their spouses, Edward (Theresa) Spohn, Connie Butz, Bud (Joan) Spohn, Rita (Phil) Donnelly, Patricia (Skip) Root, Sid Spohn, Jerry Spohn, Phyllis June, Donald Spohn, James and Loretta Spohn (twins); brothers-in-law, Ed Miller and Tyke Griswold.
